Injectable PMMA bone cement
Osteoporotic compression fractures of the spine are the lead indication for the development of injectable bone cements and bone substitute materials. Modern treatment concepts rely on minimal invasive application of polymeric bone cements into damaged vertebral bodies, thereby stabilizing the instable fracture and reducing pain.
Conventional bone cements are far from optimal for minimal invasive treatment of fractured osteoporotic bone. Limited injectability, demanding and unreliable handling properties due to changing viscosity during setting time, short application window and a biomechanical mismatch with osteoporotic bone are disadvantageous.
Therefore, we are developing new formulations of easily injectable polymeric bone cements applicable in many clinically relevant indications with special emphasis on the requirements of minimal invasive application in osteoporotic fractures.
